Brandon G. Bergman, PhD
Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School; Associate Director, Recovery Research Institute (RRI), Center for Addiction Medicine (CAM), Massachusetts General Hospital
Brandon G. Bergman, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Associate Director of the Recovery Research Institute (RRI), in the Center for Addiction Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Bergman’s research targets the intersection between professional-clinical and freely accessible, community-based services for substance use disorder (SUD). He is particularly interested in how this clinical-community synergy meets the needs of individuals during the developmental life stage of emerging adulthood (i.e., ages 18-29). Dr. Bergman’s current line of research integrates the contemporary ethos of social technologies into existing models of SUD recovery. This research examines the nature and utility of participation in online, digital recovery support services, as well as the use of social network site (e.g., Facebook and Instagram) data to elucidate social-recovery processes. Dr. Bergman is funded by a career development award (K23) from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His work has been recognized by early career investigator awards at annual conferences for the Research Society on Alcoholism and the American Psychological Association. He completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology at Nova Southeastern University, and his psychology internship and addiction psychology postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bergman also delivers treatment services within his private psychotherapy practice. He is a licensed psychologist in Massachusetts and a certified Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA) therapist. Outside of work, Dr. Bergman’s main passion is music. He’s been playing drums since age 12, and loves seeing live music. He’s been known to travel long distances to see his favorite band, Phish.
