Article Excerpt: UW-Madison researchers have landed a $3.5 million grant to examine whether smartphone applications can be used to help trim health care costs while still delivering quality treatment and relapse prevention tools to those with substance abuse problems. The project is being led by David Gustafson, director of the Center for Health Enhancement Systems Studies (CHESS) and Lisa Marsch, a professor of psychiatry at Dartmouth. Gustafson explains that it appears communications technologies can both deliver useful information that helps treat those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol, and also convey relapse prevention techniques.
